Some of My Favorite Birds
Although I love ALL my birds, I do have some favorites. Especially birds that I had to hand raise
"Tootsie"
Single baby and severely scalped, she was my first hand raised baby.
The color of a "tootsie roll", she's quite the "clown".
Never been a mother, but she'll go into others nests and care for their young while the parents are away eating.

"Mr. Man"
"OOPS" Baby from 2 "hen's" (or so I thought) that were inside for the winter.
Although not hand raised, he's very friendly and inquisitive. Sits with me and follows me around the loft inspecting everything I do.

"Seagul"
Can you tell how she got her name? She was severely scalped in the nest with her brother "Eagul" (looks like a bald eagle). She recovered nicely, but does have a little crooked skull. Sweet and friendly, she's my supervisor.

"Greta"
Abandoned as a single baby, I hand raised "her".
I had a "bully" bird in my loft and had to bring in 3 other youngsters until I could figure out who the bully was!
Greta was completely "put out" that she had to share her cage - standing up on the box and turning her back to the other babies.
My elderly mother said she reminds her of Greta Garbo - so she was dubbed "Greta"
"Greta" turned out to be a "HE"

Whopping "Walter" the King Pigeon
Walter was rescued in Gloucester, Mass. and looking for a forever home.
I made the day trip down to pick him up and was astonished at his size! Almost 400kg, I was sure my flock was going to be horrified when he arrived in his new loft.
Some of the older cocks were determined to put Walter "in his place", Walter politely but firmly stood his ground and was not going to tolerate any abuse.
It took about a week of confrontations before they came to middle ground. Towering over everyone, Walter was accepted and has settled in to his new home.

Walter didn't waste any time finding a mate!
Update.........
Walter is up to 5 lbs! And it has been determined that he is a 'Carneau Pigeon' not a King Pigeon

My Feeding Method......Duplicates Mom and works like a charm!
My 'Bucket Babies'!
While switching out the eggs with fake eggs one summer day, I got busy and left the bucket of eggs in the corner of the loft....that was a Saturday morning. The following Wednesday morning, I remembered to grab the bucket. To my astonishment...there was a newly hatched baby amongst the eggs on top! I rushed her inside and set up on a heating pad and off to work we went. When I got home that evening....ANOTHER BABY IN THE BUCKET!!! I gently fished him out as he just hatched and was further down inside. I went thru the bucket and checked each remaining egg! Both babies were successfully 'bottle raised' and full grown now...But they'll always be my 'Bucket Babies' |
